One of the most frequent questions we get is about where to find great tasting gluten free beer – are celiacs doomed to forever drink Corona and Budweiser (yes, legally with less than 20 parts per million gluten it is gluten free)? Well, slowly more and more great options are appearing on the market including Mongozo, an award winning certified fair trade and gluten free pilsner from Belgium.
Pouring a clear straw gold with a quickly dissolving alka-seltzer head and sweet aromas of grain and floral hops. The taste is very similar to the smell with flavours of grain, rice, floral hops and a lingering dry malty finish. The body is thin with a beautiful effervescence that makes it crisp and very refreshing.
Not a very complicated beer in flavour, but quite impressive that it's gluten free.
Mongozo is not only the African word for "cheers" but also the name of the first fair-trade lager in the world. I was excited to crack open my very first gluten free beer for this review.
The beer poured very clear with barely any head. The aromas were a mix of citrus and hops, with a just hint of yeast.
The taste was very crisp with a nice balance of citrus, a bitterness from the hops along with a subtle caramel sweetness.
Overall a decent beer – very light but also very highly carbonated. Whether you follow a gluten free diet or not, this would make for a great patio beer in the summer or when you want to reach for something lighter.
