Ottawa Beer Events first chatted with Ian McMartin about Whiprsnapr Brewing Company back in December 2013. Since then he, along with his 2 partners have been busy brewing, demolishing and building their brewery in Bells Corners which will open its doors to the public today for the first time.
As with most new breweries they are starting small, brewing on a 1.5 barrel system for now but intend to move to a 20 barrel system in the future (you can see the shiny new equipment is set up in their brewery).
Not all of Whiprsnapr's beers will be available today, but their lineup gives you sneak peek at what they intend to offer:
Root of Evil – Preprohibition Lager (4.4% ABV, 32 IBU)
This crisp and clean pre-prohibition lager reflects the way beer was made before probition. Local grains and hops, a touch of roasted corn and a hint of smoke will take you back to the bootlegging days.
Inukshuk – Canadian IPA (5.5% ABV, 55 IBU)
We made this 'Canadian' IPA to remind you of those days of just being in the woods doing whatever, breathing in all the good clean air.
F'n'L – British IPA (6% ABV, 70 IBU)
British malts, hops and yeast with distinct aroma. A 'British India Pale Ale' – big, loud, hard hitting punk rock beer.
Black Sunshine – Black Lager (5.8% ABV, 28 IBU)
This black lager uses dark roasted malts and is aged with whisky soaked oak chips – makes it smooth and tasty. Goes fast!
Carol Anne – Irish Blonde Ale (4.7% ABV, 34 IBU)
An Irish blonde ale – fresh as a spring day, full of floral aromas with hints of fruit. Named after brewer/owner Ian's Mom who helped harvest his first hop crop. A portion of the proceeds go to the Canadian cancer society.
Make sure to stop in an grab a pint, as they are one of the few breweries in town with a By the Glass license. Their beer will also be available for sale in 1 litre growlers wich will range from $7 – $9 with a $3 deposit and they have lots of great merchandise for sale in their signature purple, which also made it's way onto their bar and tap handles!
Whiprsnapr Brewing Company is located at 14 Bexley Place (Unit 106) in Bells Corners (behind The Butchery). Their opening hours are Thursday (4pm – 9pm), Friday (12pm – 9pm), Saturday (11am – 9pm) and Sunday (12pm – 5pm).
Katy and Sasha are the contributors for Ottawa Beer Events! They have distinctly different palates and in this segment they go head-to-head tasting Ottawa beer. This week they sample Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company’s Night•Märzen.
I always look forward to Beau’s Night•Märzen. The brilliant copper is a reminder that fall is on the way and that my favourite festival, Beau’s Oktoberfest, is on the horizon. Usually if I have enough money squared away I’ll order a couple of boxes of this fall treat to sustain me for a few months. This year I’ve had to survive on dribs and drabs as I’ve made a promise to myself to concentrate my beer money on homebrewing efforts. Still, this malt forward lager is delightful with flavours of toasted malt, bread and a subtle herbal and grassy hop to keep it in check.
Seek out the stock that’s left of this beer now and enjoy it while sitting in a pile of leaves, carving a pumpkin or something equally fall-y.
I’m sipping on this beer on a cold fall day – the perfect time to dive into this Oktoberfest offering, who’s deep orange color reminds me of the fall leaves that are covering the ground right now.
In line with the style, the aroma is rich with munich malts which are also present in the sweet taste. It has a slight bitter, dry finish due to the 30 IBUs which is a tad higher than normal for the style but still offers a solid medium bodied beer that is great for stein clashing at Oktoberfest celebrations or hunkering down on a cold fall evening.
The Brewery Market has released their list of over 45 beer for this Saturday's event.

Cassel Brewery has released their limited edition Harvest Ale today.
Mario Bourgeois, Co-owner and Brewmaster spoke about the beer in a post we did earlier this month on Harvest Ales:
"We obtained hops from what was harvested back in 1920 in Fournier ON! That hop is said to be a bohemian likely Saaz. Up to 1958 they employed well over 2000 people to help during the harvesting season. A retired belgian farmer kept some plants and multiplied them over the years. We were lucky to get 10lbs of dried hops and we are likely the first one to brew again with this hop which once was very popular. Our supplier got an interview with an 87 year old man who was the third generation to harvest this hop, he was employing over 600 people on his farm only… yep all in Fournier ON!"
The flavours of this beer range from spicy to floral to earthy, bitterness is well balanced with an intriguing aroma.
The Harvest ale is available at Cassel Brewery however only 200 were bottled so you'll want to drop in and get some soon!
Ottawa Brewery Market returns for our final event of the season on Satuday, October 25th with HintonTOBERFEST at Hintonburg Park, in Hintonburg.
Our take on an Oktoberfest party, we'll be serving up local craft beer from Bicycle Craft Brewery, Dominion City Brewing Co., Flying Monkeys, Lowertown Brewery, Nickel Brook, Stone City Ales, Turtle Island Brewing, and Whitewater Brewing Company.
Also featured at The Brewery Market is National Capital Homebrew Competition winner, Andy Morrisson's collaboration brew with Broadhead Brewing Company:
Andy Morrisson won the National Capital Homebrew Competition this summer and we had the pleasure of collaborating with him on this brew. We brought him in for a regular brew day and put our heads together over some pints and brewing. What we came up with is not for the faint of heart! A special brew day was set up and "The Amarillo Chainsaw Massacre" ensued!
Delicious sausages will be served by Sunnydays Gourmet Dogs and Sula Wok will be there with tasty Asian tacos.
And the event happens rain or shine!
FAMILY-FRIENDLY. Hintonburg Park features a wonderful play area. Bring your chairs and hacky sack and come relax for the day.
Proceeds support Ottawa Riverkeeper, because you can't make great beer without clean water.

Dominion City Brewing Company's latest seasonal is the Earnscliffe ESB. It blends caramel and biscuit malt notes with mild earthy hop aroma. A rich, full-flavoured ale, this quintessential style is popular in traditional UK pubs. This beer is named for the residence of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald; now home to the British High Commissioner to Canada. Sounds stodgy; tastes bloody brilliant.
Earnscliffe ESB is available for purchase at Dominion City's retail store while quantities last!
