Beau's describes La Formidable as a 6.9% American-Belgo IPA; a relatively new hybrid beer style that crosses bold, citrusy American-style hop aromas with the signature fruity, spicy and earthy elements of Belgian yeast. The hazy golden ale exudes appetizing aromas of grapefruit and orange, along with light piney notes and white pepper. The flavour offers a firm but balanced bitterness that is complemented by citrus fruitiness. The finish is spicy with earthy undertones.
The Brewers will be at The Black Tomato in Ottawa Fri. Feb. 27 for a “Meet the Brewers” event from 7-9 pm and at the Beau’s Brewery in Vankleek Hill to greet visitors on Saturday Feb. 28 from 1-4 pm.
You can find this and other #feBREWary beer on tap at one of the following locations: http://www.beaus.ca/febrewary/taps.
La Formidable will also become available in LCBO stores in early-to-mid March.

Somewhat of a rare gem in recent times, Mild is a lower-alcohol brown ale that slaked the thirst of miners and other labourers in England and Wales. Since history has proven Mild Ales to be the perfect reward for hard work, go shovel your driveway (again) and then grab yourself a Farm Table Mild Ale… you’ve earned it.
A brown-coloured ale with red highlights, which exhibits nutty, fruity and subtle caramel and roast aromas. A satisfying nutty and biscuity flavour comes through along with some sweet, plum-like fruity notes. The finish is dry with a slight suggestion of grain.

Katy and Sasha are the contributors for Ottawa Beer Events! They have distinctly different palates and in this segment they go head-to-head tasting Ottawa beer. This week they sample Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company’s Night•Märzen.
I always look forward to Beau’s Night•Märzen. The brilliant copper is a reminder that fall is on the way and that my favourite festival, Beau’s Oktoberfest, is on the horizon. Usually if I have enough money squared away I’ll order a couple of boxes of this fall treat to sustain me for a few months. This year I’ve had to survive on dribs and drabs as I’ve made a promise to myself to concentrate my beer money on homebrewing efforts. Still, this malt forward lager is delightful with flavours of toasted malt, bread and a subtle herbal and grassy hop to keep it in check.
Seek out the stock that’s left of this beer now and enjoy it while sitting in a pile of leaves, carving a pumpkin or something equally fall-y.
I’m sipping on this beer on a cold fall day – the perfect time to dive into this Oktoberfest offering, who’s deep orange color reminds me of the fall leaves that are covering the ground right now.
In line with the style, the aroma is rich with munich malts which are also present in the sweet taste. It has a slight bitter, dry finish due to the 30 IBUs which is a tad higher than normal for the style but still offers a solid medium bodied beer that is great for stein clashing at Oktoberfest celebrations or hunkering down on a cold fall evening.
Cask ale or cask-conditioned beer is unfiltered and unpasteurised beer which is conditioned (including secondary fermentation) and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure.

Bowman’s Bar & Grill is a small and cozy, but elevated pub-style restaurant located on Carling Ave. (1170 Carling Ave., across the street from the Royal Ottawa, former location of the “New Debrovnik”.) Their slogan, “Familiar Food Done Well”, could just as easily be, “Local Beer Done Well”, as they pride themselves in serving a variety of outstanding local craft beer.
Bowman's holds an open mic night every Saturday, but this week is super exciting! Chris Rayburn, beer rep for Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company, created a song about Beau’s and sang it during his interview. He will be peforming this song on Saturday September 20, 2014.
This week, in addition to regular offerings of Beau’s Lugtread and the fall seasonal, Night•Märzen, they will be serving Dark Helmut. All Beau’s beer will be discounted by 10%, and $1 from every Beau’s sale will go to “Operation Come Home” (http://operationcomehome.ca/). They will also be raffling off a Beau’s gift basket that includes tickets to Beau’s Oktoberfest.
Beau's All Natural Brewing Company has released their 2nd edition of their Oktoberfest Mix Pack featuring 4 of the 13 beers that will be pouring at their annual Oktoberfest (October 3-4, 2014) celebration in Vankleek Hill. The four beers featured are:
Happy Pilsner - Bohemian Pilsner • 5.3% alc/vol
The Bohemian pilsner is a staple of the German diet, and we're happy to include one for you in the 2014 Beau’s Oktoberfest mix pack! Pale blond in colour, Happy Pilsner’s light floral, herbal and honey aromas take your senses on a trip to their happy place: the ever-enjoyable taste of a crisp, clean traditional lager. Traditional to the style, the flavour has some yeast-derived soft sulfur notes. The hopping provides medium bitterness that balances the malt profile without harshness.
Dark Helmüt - Imperious Schwarzbier • 7.3% alc/vol
Dark Helmüt is an extra-strong version of a German black lager. It displays a mellow roasted character that is juxtaposed with the enjoyable lager crispness. Malty, bready notes (think pumpernickel without caraway) provide the backdrop to this clean, crisp beer. Dark Helmüt has refined mocha inflections and a surprisingly subtle roasted flavour for a beer as dark as the furthest reaches of the galaxy. Malt depth maintains a pleasant balance and keeps the bigger alcohol presence nicely integrated.
Rauchstack - Smoked Dunkel • 6.9% alc/vol
Rauchstack is a smooth, full-bodied smoked ale. The distinctive smoky character, courtesy of wood-fire kilned malts in the recipe, is balanced by rich, malty sweetness. The body is luscious and the flavour echoes the smoky scent, giving the sense of a beer that could almost be a meal. Our friend Thomas at Weyermann Malts in Bamberg, Germany, custom-designed the malt profile for this recipe (over breakfast no less!), and we brewed it in tribute to our close ties with them.
Dial "Z" for Zwickel - Zwickelbier • 5.7% alc/vol
Dial “Z” for Zwickel is a rare new creation from the Beau’s brew team, a hazy copper-coloured lager called a zwickelbier – a beer so über-fresh, it tastes like you walked right up to our tanks and poured it yourself. The flavour and aroma are ripe with bready, yeasty goodness and fresh grassy notes, and a finely balanced hop presence. Zwickelbiers are seriously not meant for aging, and best served… right now!
The 4-pack will be available at select LCBOs, the brewery, and Beau's home delivery service, BYBO.ca.
Beau’s welcomes the heat of the summer with Patio Saison, a snappy and refreshing unfiltered ale. The 5.9% ABV saison offers up mild pepper-and-clove spice in harmony with both the citrusy zest of organic orange peel, and the floral aroma of organic elder flower.
The saison style has its origins in the Wallonia region of Belgium. Traditionally this beer was brewed to slake the thirst of farmhands during harvest time, so it makes a perfect beer for warm weather. Beau’s originally released Patio Saison in 2012 in restaurants and pubs across Ontario to celebrate the beginning of patio season, and this fan-favourite also made an appearance in the 2013 Best of Beau's mixed pack.
A dry, refreshing Belgian-style ale with fruity character, courtesy of both the fermentation and the addition of dried organic orange peel. The complexity is enhanced with the characteristic Belgian yeast spiciness and mild earthy undertones.
Available at the LCBO, Beau's brewery and select restaurants and pubs.
