Ottawa Brewery 15
Whitewater Brewing Company has released their latest seasonal, Das Bier. The 5.6% ABV Oktoberfest is a tribute to German tradition with a pretzel-like body, leaf noble hops and best served with a sprinkle of salt.
Currently Das Bier is available at The Smoque Shack with other locations to follow.
The Clocktower Brew Pub announced the return of their popular pumpkin seasonal to all of their Ottawa brewpubs. This is the sixth year of brewing Pumpkin Ale and the second year that they've taken preorders for growlers and bombers.
The 5% ABV, 18 IBU brew that uses real pumpkins in the mash is described as follows:
The colour of the Pumpkin Ale is dark orange to amber, which makes it close to the colour of roasted pumpkin. The flavours and aromas in the beer are quite delicate. When it is left to simmer in the mouth for a moment or two, the distinct spice notes burst forth. The initial flavour is somewhat sweet, but that only lasts for a moment, as the taste of pumpkin and spice fill up the palate. It has very little after taste although it does leave a dry tingle on the tongue after the initial sip.
Clocktower's Pumpkin Ale is available at all Clocktower Brew Pub locations as well as in Growlers and Bombers at their Glebe retail location.
Ottawa Beer Events first chatted with Fariborz Behzadi about Bicycle Craft Brewery, the brewery he and his wife, Laura, were starting back in May 2014. Since then the husband and wife team have busy building, brewing and decorating the Industrial Avenue tap room which will be open to the public for the first time this weekend (September 20-21, 2014) for the first time.
For it's opening, Bicycle Craft Brewery will have its four flagship brews available in Growlers (1.89l/64 oz – $12 + $4 deposit) and Half Growlers (0.95l/32oz – $7 + $4 deposit):
Velocipede India Pale Ale
Inspired by the original name for the bicycle, our IPA is hoppy and bitter with floral and pine aromas. This IPA is packed full of adventurous hops and citrus flavours that excite the palate and lead you to an enjoyably bitter finish. With four hops in the boil, and dry hopped with Centennial hops, this IPA is well-balanced and light copper in colour. Velocipede IPA is a true testament to the bicycle and the wild places you discover on the way.
Base Camp Oatmeal Porter
A dark and warming porter with hints of biscuit, caramel and dark chocolate. Medium in body, this porter is packed full of deeply roasted malts and hearty oatmeal leading to a silky smooth finish. Inspired by the comfort of base camp, this porter will warm your belly and ease your soul.
Belle River Blonde
A light, crisp and refreshing blonde that is well-balanced and easy on the palate. With subtle hints of malt and hops, this easy-drinking blonde is sure to quench your thirst. Inspired by the hometown of the matriarch of Bicycle Craft Brewery, Belle River Blonde is down-to-earth, unpretentious and humble. Grab a Belle River Blonde, put your boots up and gaze out at the cornfields after a hard day’s work.
Abyss Chocolate Stout
A dark, full-bodied, stout with hints of cocoa and chocolate malt. Made with pure organic cocoa, this stout carries subtle hints of hops, and a full, smokey flavour. With a smooth finish and a subtle cocoa flavour that lingers on your palate, Abyss Chocolate Stout is distinctive and bittersweet. Rich and nearly black in colour, this stout is as dark as the abyss.
While tours of the brewery won't be available until a later date, Fariborz and Laura invite you to have a seat in their tap room (which has a great view of their brewing vessels), sample some of their brews or enjoy a glass (355ml/12 oz) of beer for $3.50.
Bicycle Craft Brewery is located at 850 Industrial Avenue (close to St. Laurent Boulevard) and will be open from 11:00am – 7:00pm on Saturday, September 20 and 12:00am – 4:00pm on September 21.
Big Rig Brewery has announced that their Scotch Ale is returning to the brewpub taps as of Monday, September 7, 2014. It's described as follows:
A smooth sweetness starts off this complex brew. Layers of different malted barley including barley that was smoked with peat moss give it a mild grain and peat flavour. We also add the delicious parts of an oak barrel to give it a balanced oak finish.
Big Rig's Scotch Ale is available on tap or by the growler at their west-end brewpub location – 2750 Iris Street.

For Pivot's Sake is a non-profit organization that was established in 2012 to engage and mentor youth in the Ottawa community. After years of throwing out used decks, seeing old trucks get tossed aside and wheels left forgotten at the skate park, we have decided to step up and try to reduce, reuse and recycle. For Pivots Sake is a program designed to get a little more life out of your old skateboard goods by recycling them with intentions to help out youth across the City of Ottawa.
Tickets are $85.00 with beer pairing or $65.00 without and available online on Eventbrite.

Now pouring at Mill Street Brew Pub Ottawa! Tasting notes from Brew Master Joel Manning:
This is the dark side of Palomar! I love this beer! It has the smokey pepper and lime character of the regular Palomar but punched up in a darker malt base and pure chocolate extract added to it. To finish it off, we Nitrogen charge this beer to add to the creaminess and to take the edge of the otherwise overwhelming combination of flavours in there. Lime, chipotle and chocolate–now that's a real Mexican flavour combo that will just make you happy in March in Ottawa when you've just about had it with winter!
